Telecommunications: New e-commerce technology for Kenya.

Kenyans could soon have access to revolutionary new technology allowing them to check their bank balances, pay utility bills and make other transactions by mobile phone, “Business Daily” reports. The service, called Commerce 360, is the result of a partnership between leading bank Standard Chartered Kenya and software company Cellulant and is based on a technology called Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), a messaging function in GSM cell phones. Initially the service will be available only to Standard Chartered customers although Cellulant is reportedly already in negotiations with other banks. The firm has signed deals with Kenya’s two leading mobile phone providers, Safaricom and Celtel, to allow subscribers of both companies to access the service.
